The Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Its origin can be traced back to ancient times when people believed in spirits and gods.

It is said that the festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan was a government official who was exiled by the corrupt officials in the royal court. He spent his life writing poems and promoting patriotism. When he heard that his country was invaded by a foreign power, he drowned himself in the Miluo River in despair. His death was mourned by the people, who raced their boats to the site where he drowned to retrieve his body and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body.

The festival has evolved into a cultural event that features dragon boat races, eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), and hanging aromatic herbs such as mugwort and calamus to repel insects and diseases.

Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated not only in China but also in many other countries around the world. It is a time for people to show their respect for traditional Chinese culture, enjoy the festivities with family and friends, and take a break from their busy lives.
